Weather All That Can Slow Charger Men

Men’s Basketball: The new year has proved successful so far for the Columbia State men. The Charger men improved their record to 13-4, 6-3 in the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association. In their first two games of January, the Chargers traveled to and topped Martin Methodist’s JV team, 118-85, and Jackson State, 107-86. The recent deep freeze slowed the Chargers’ hot streaks, as games at Elizabethtown College and at home against Cleveland State and Chattanooga State were postponed until a later date. Next weekend, Columbia State travels to Roane State and Walters State in TCCAA play.

At this point of the season, the Columbia State men are one of the nation’s top offensive teams. In all of the National Junior College Athletic Association, the Chargers rank in the top 10 in ten different categories, including 2nd in free throw attempts, total rebounds and rebounding margin per game and 1st in offensive rebounds and steals per game.

Women’s Basketball: The young Lady Chargers have struggled to have the same hot start as the Charger men. Columbia State’s ladies have only one non-freshman player this year, sophomore Marlee Stevens. The Columbia State ladies are 5-13, 1-8 in TCCAA play. The Lady Chargers are giving up 66 points per game, while scoring 53.3 points per game.

Since the start of 2016, the Lady Chargers are 1-3. After a loss at Wallace State (Alabama), Columbia State won at Gadsden State (Alabama), 81-80. Since then, the Lady Chargers at Jackson State and at home to Arkansas State-Mid South. Like the Charger men, the Columbia State ladies’ contests with Cleveland State and Chattanooga State were postponed due to the winter weather.

The Lady Chargers join the men in traveling to Roane State and Walters State this week, where they look to continue to improve on their TCCAA record as their team gets more experience.
