WCS Holding Public Meeting on Rezoning Tuesday Night

Williamson County Schools proposed a rezoning plan that would affect 8% of the district’s nearly 40,000 students earlier this month. The first of four community meetings is Tuesday night at Independence High School from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

District representatives will go over the effects of the plan in depth at the meetings.

The proposal will create zone lines for the district’s three coming new schools: an elementary school in Brentwood and an elementary and a middle school in Thompson’s Station. Those schools will open for the 2018-19 school year.

After the community meetings, the Board plans to vote on the new rezoning plan in May.

The meeting schedule is below:

  • March 28 – Independence High
  • April 4 – Franklin High
  • April 5 – Page High
  • April 6 – Ravenwood High

All meetings are from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

In total, 2,953 students will be rezoned:

1,418 elementary, 891 middle and 644 high school students will be rezoned based on projected attendance in 2018-2019. Of current students, 914 in elementary and 528 in middle school will switch schools.

Nine of the 44 district schools are over capacity and six more are nearing. The number of students in the district is projected at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year to be 39,919 and is expected to increase by 4 to 5 percent each year. The rezoning plan looks at where houses are being built and makes tweaks to anticipate the best way to distribute that growth, and also to fill in the three new schools previously mentioned.
