Carnton Plantation served as the largest field hospital for wounded during the Battle of Franklin. On the morning of December 1, 1864, the bodies of four Confederate Generals lay on the homes back porch. Blood stains still remain on the floors of this restored historic icon. A cemetery for 1500 confederate soldiers is maintained on the property. The McGavock Confederate Cemetery is the largest privately owned military cemetery in the nation and serves as a lasting memorial.
