Mallory Station Road

This one is a sleeper of sorts. Most of the roads on this list most of you have probably traveled on and would be at the top of your own list of the busiest and worst trafficked roads in the county. Mallory Station Road is one only those of us unlucky enough to try to use it as a shortcut or back-way (you know, to avoid the traffic on Cool Springs Boulevard and Moore’s Lane and McEwen Drive).

The hierarchy of streets, as judged by traffic engineers, goes like this: Freeway, Major Arterial, Minor Arterial, Major Collector and Minor Collector. They are assigned not in terms of how much traffic goes on them but in terms of the flow of traffic, where roads lead, as it were, and how to lay them out to take us there most efficiently.

An example of freeway, of course, would be I-65. A major artery, Franklin Road or Highway 96. A minor artery, Liberty Pike or Wilson Pike, a major collector would be S. Margin Street, Del Rio Pike or 1st and 2nd Avenues in Franklin. A minor collector would be like Clovercroft Road.

Mallory Station is considered a major collector, basically a second option to a second option. The Station sees nearly 12,000 vehicles per day. Del Rio sees about 7,000 to 8,000 a day while 1st Avenue in downtown Franklin  travels on average 2,624.

So a two-lane, two-way road that ideally should be a sort-of pressure-release valve for more major and direct routes instead gets nearly the same traffic volume as Franklin Road- a Major Arterial road- between Moores Lane and Mack Hatcher.

If you don’t believe me, try taking the back way to the mall from downtown Franklin one Saturday. The author has personally waited 45 minutes to make a left onto Mallory Lane from Mallory Station on a Saturday afternoon.

Really, there are probably other Mallory Stations in Williamson County. It all just speaks to the problem the county has with traffic in general. Nashville, and its metropolitan area, has been ranked by some studies as the worst traffic area in the country.
