Terry Lancaster To Launch Book At Brentwood Library

Almost half the people people reading this will be making resolutions for the New Year. Losing weight, getting in better shape, and making more money are among the most popular resolutions every year. That’s the good news. Those are worthwhile goals.
The bad news is fewer than one out ten people who make resolutions this year will keep them.- Terry Lancaster

Why Resolutions Fail:

Resolutions fail for two primary reasons according to author Terry Lancaster.
“The main reason resolutions fail is we’ve made a wish list instead of a to do list,” says Lancaster. “Our resolutions speak to what we want instead of what we’re going to do to make it happen.”
He recommends readers concentrate more on the required actions than on the desired outcomes. How often are they going to exercise to lose weight and get in shape? How many additional sales calls will they make to achieve their desired income?
But according to Lancaster, even concentration on action isn’t enough to make sure resolutions make it past Valentine’s Day if they lack this one essential ingredient:
Automaticity (noun): the ability to do things without occupying the mind with the low-level details required, allowing it to become an automatic response pattern or habit. It is usually the result of learning, repetition, and practice.
Most of what people usually think of as decisions, aren’t decisions at all. They’re automatic, conditioned responses. People may think they decided to have that donut this morning. But they didn’t really decide anything. They saw it. They smelled it. They imagined how it would taste. And they picked it up and took a bite before ever giving it a second thought. That’s automaticity.

BETTER! Self Help For The Rest Of Us

Terry LancasterTerry Lancaster’s new book BETTER! Self Help For The Rest Of Us is about building automaticity into readers’ daily lives using its life altering magic for good instead of evil. For taking a walk instead of eating the donut.
“It’s not about making a million dollars, losing a hundred pounds or running a marathon,” he says. “Let’s start thinking about the tiny steps that we can take today to improve our lives. Steps that we can repeat again tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that until they become habits. Habits that we keep for the rest of our lives. Habits that can help us make the lives we have now better, automatically.”
BETTER! Self Help For The Rest Of Us combines the science behind habit formation, focus, and flow with personal stories about overcoming a lifetime of addiction, bad habits, and poor personal decisions in an unexpected and fun juxtaposition.
By giving up the pursuit of unattainable, perfect, storybook lives, readers can start taking small steps towards making their actual lives better. BETTER! Self Help For The Rest Of Us shows how tiny changes to just a few foundational habits can cause ripples that reverberate into every area of life. Exercise. Meditation. Focus. Gratitude. Nutrition. Readers will learn how minor improvements in these key areas alter the very physical structure of their brains, making the next minor tweak that much easier.
They’ll also learn about naked yoga, why there’s always going to be a little bird poop in the pool and how Jerry Seinfeld can change their life.
BETTER! Self Help For The Rest Of Us will be released on December 28th and will be available as a free digital download on Amazon from then through the end of the year.

“Terry Lancaster has written the ultimate un-self help book. Based on proven methods he continues to use every day, BETTER! gives readers a slew of small, surprisingly simple, easy-to-start actions that hold the power to transform their lives from “shoulda coulda woulda” to “Just Do It! … Hey, I’m Doing It! … I Did It!” Filled with the wisdom of experience, self-deprecating humor, and a refreshing awareness of how human psychology actually works, BETTER! is destined to be the last self-help book you will ever need,” says Thomas Fiffer, Senior Editor, Ethics, The Good Men Project.
“What a crazy ride! This is a self-help book that’s actually fun to read. Terry’s personality shines through on every page, and you can almost hear him speaking directly to you. In his own unique self-effacing way, Terry drives us through the simple yet powerful techniques that he used to turn his life around. I loved reading it, but more importantly, I love how easy the steps are for us to get better every day,” says Joanne Eckton, author of Make Your Job Great
