In December, owner of Suger Drop in Brentwood, Jan Edens put a notice on the door of her business stating that it would be closing unless she could find a new owner. After being open for 40 years, Edens was finding that she did not have the time to run the store while also pursuing a nonprofit she began.

Friday afternoon, Edens announced that the Sugar Drop legacy will continue with new owner Brooke O’Dell, and the store will remain open as the continue renovations.

Sugar Drop has been open in Brentwood for over 40 years. While under Edens, the shop was two-stores-in-one. One side of the store was a bridal shop, on the other, a bakery supply shop, offering fondant icing, candy making molds, melting chocolates and other baking supplies.

Edens is the third owner of the business purchasing it back in 2009. She starting as an employee in 2005.

O’Dell will continue the baking and candy portion of the business expanding to include a kitchen where cooking classes will be offered on a regular basis. However, the bridal portion of the business will not continue.

Now that the business has sold, Edens will continue her work public speaking to spread the word about the nonprofit she founded called the Jason Edens Memorial Association. Jason Edens, Jan’s step-son, died five years ago while serving in Afghanistan. He received the Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge in addition to numerous other awards and medals. Jason was a graduate of Franklin High School.

Through the Jason Edens Memorial Association, it gives money to the Fisher House and Journey Home Project. Looking ahead, Edens hopes to one day open a facility for animals who will be trained to assist soldiers who suffer from PTSD.

Running both the nonprofit and business is time-consuming. “I just can’t do it both,” says Edens. “It saddens me to say goodbye to Sugar Drop and to all of you,” Edens said in an email. “In honor of Jason and to keep his memory alive, we are choosing to give back,” said Edens.

Currently, the Jason Eden’s Memorial Associaton website is under construction but interested parties may submit their email to receive notifications from the foundation.
