Spring Hill Community Garden Opens This Weekend

A community garden for the benefit and use of students and seniors will have its official first planting this weekend.

Off Kedron Road in Maury County next to the Wastewater Treatment Plant, the ceremonial planting will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The exact address is 3893 Mahlon Moore Road.

The community garden, created in partnership with the City of Spring Hill, will begin with the planting of sunflower seeds by the Kiwanis Club of Spring Hill and Thompson’s Station’s Builder’s Club from Heritage Middle School and the Kiwanis Summit High School Key Club.

From there it will start building a composting area.

The 12-acre “Late Bloomers” garden will begin its first phase with the sunflower planting along the roadway.

Phase 2 will have an edible schoolyard for homeschoolers, a Monarch butterfly habitat, a covered pavilion, a restroom, a herb garden, wheelchair accessible gardens and contained beds.

Jamie Page, spokesman for the city, said the city’s public works department plans to put in some in-kind donations.

The Public Works department plans on running a two-inch water line, a sewer line and helping to construct a gravel road into the garden with two gates. The estimated cost to the city would be between $2,310 and $3,310, he said.
