Southern Festival of Books Features Williamson County Authors

The Southern Festival of Books, held at War Memorial Plaza in Nashville, will be Oct 10-12th and features several Williamson County authors.

Southern festival of booksHumanities Tennessee’s Southern Festival of Books: A Celebration of the Written Wordsm was first held in Nashville on the second full weekend (Friday-Sunday) in October, 1989, and has been held annually on the same weekend since then. One of the first book festivals of its kind, it has inspired hundreds of similar book festivals throughout the nation and beyond.

The Festival is free and hosts approximately 200 writers from around the country. Authors range from mystery writers to poets to chefs to songwriters and everything in between. Every author takes part in a session, either a solo reading or a panel discussion, followed by a book signing in the Author Signing Colonnade. Books by all the participating authors are available for sale at Festival book sales area where proceeds support the Festival.

The Festival showcases the talents of many Middle Tennessee writers, some of those are Williamson County residents. These authors are:

Kirk Walker Graves 

Graves is a writer from Tennessee at work on his first novel. He lives in Franklin with his wife and son. His first book – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy – is a critical meditation on Kanye West and American narcissism in the digital age. Visit kirkwalkergraves.com/


James R. Knight 

Knight spent five years as a pilot for the U.S. Air Force and thirty-one years as a pilot for Federal Express. He has published four books. He lives in Franklin, where he works part time as a historical interpreter for the Battle of Franklin Trust, giving tours of the Carter House historical site. He and his wife, Judy, have been married for 46 years and have three children and six grandchildren. His current book isHood’s Tennessee Campaign: The Desperate Venture of a Desperate Man


Muscadine LinesKathy Rhodes 

Rhodes is a native of the Mississippi Delta, is a board member of the Tennessee Writers Alliance and president of the Williamson County Council for the Written Word. She is the author of Pink Butterbeans: Stories from the Heart of a Southern Woman. She is publisher/editor of the online magazine Muscadine Lines: A Southern Journal, (asouthernjournal.com), and is also editor of the book Muscadine Lines: A Southern Anthology and co-editor of Gathering: Writers of Williamson County. She lives in Franklin, Tennessee. Her current book is Remember the Dragonflies: A Memoir of Grief and Healing

In addition to panels, the Festival hosts popular book exhibitors and has programs  on three performance stages throughout the event. The Chapter 16 Stage highlights readings and other literary performances. The Café Stage features music by some of the area’s most talented songwriters and poets. Special events for children take place on the Youth Stage including appearances by favorite characters, musicians, artists, and a storyteller.

The festival is expected to attract more than 30,000 visitors. The events runs Friday, Oct 10th 12p-5p, Saturday, Oct 11th 10a-6p and Sunday, Oct 12th 12p-5p.

Another feature of the festival is the 7th Annual Authors in the Round Dinner. On Friday, Oct 10th, guests can mingle with 40 of the festival writers. The dinner begins at 6:30pm. This year, the participating authors include: Rick Bragg, Congressman James Clyburn, Pat Conroy, Joshua Ferris, Christina Baker Kline, Gary Shteyngart, Gabrielle Zevin, and many more. Tickets are $200 each and $1,600 for a table of eight. A portion of your ticket purchase is tax-deductible and all proceeds benefit the Southern Festival of Books.
