Scene Around Town: Darrell Waltrip Celebrates Over 50 Hometown Heroes

Wednesday, Sept 22nd, a luncheon was held for 52 heroic men and women who have been honored as Darrell Waltrip Hometown Heroes.

Waltrip began “Hometown Heroes” where members of the community could nominate everyday heroes who are working among us in the community. In the words of Darrell Waltrip “ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things.” Over the years, countless heroes have been recognized, including local war hero, Jimmy Gentry, Deb Williams (St Jude Dream House) to Millie Webb (MADD) who was instrumental in helping to change the legal limit to drive under the influence from .10 to .08 after her family suffered a tragic accident involving a drunk driver. Each month Waltrip recognizes a hero and makes a $500 donation to a charity of their choice.

As each hero explained their cause, one hero said, “I feel as if I am in an room of angels. This room is filled with community minded people who go about doing community work in so many ways. Each with a different cause and yet so impactful to our community.”

Hometown Heroes continues as they soon recognize #53 hero. Nominate your Hometown Hero by completing this online form. And to see the complete list of prior Hometown Heroes, visit Hometown Heroes.
