An upset win in the second round didn’t give the Ravenwood Raptors enough momentum in the state quarterfinals Friday.
The Raptors (7-6) went into their matchup at Cordova (12-1) fresh off a 38-35 upset of Mt. Juliet the previous week. Whatever momentum they had didn’t make the trip to Memphis, though, as the Wolves rolled to a 42-16 win.
Ravenwood put itself in a hole right away. Cordova jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter and took a 28-7 lead into halftime.
The Raptors made an attempt at a comeback in the third quarter, outscoring the Wolves 9-0 with a McCain Marrow 4-yard rushing score and a safety.
They got no closer than 28-16, as Cordova closed out the game on a 14-0 run in the fourth quarter to win 42-16.
Ravenwood didn’t help its own cause in its comeback attempt. The Raptors turned the ball over three times (two fumbles, one interception) and were penalized 10 times for 101 yards.
It was the Wolves’ passing attack that gave Ravenwood the most fits. Quarterback Christian Arrambide connected on 13-of-25 passes for 255 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Edward Johnson was his main target, catching six passes for 156 yards and a score.
Carter Nelson finished with 14 rushes for 57 yards for the Raptors, and Marrow completed 15-of-35 yards for 137 yards and an interception.
The season was an up-and-down one for the Raptors. After starting just 2-3, they won five of their next seven games, including three in a row going into Friday’s matchup with Whitehaven. They also took down Mt. Juliet, the winner of their region, twice this season.
