Superintendent Mike Looney casually walked onto the Nolensville High School field Friday night after jumping out of a helicopter.

He and a handful of other jumpers surprised the crowd at the Knights’ first-ever home game and delivered the game ball in a more special fashion than a toss from the sideline.

“I was asked by the athletic director of the school system,” he said. “I told him absolutely. I don’t need an excuse to skydive. I’ve jumped into several stadiums here in Williamson County. But it’s a special night here. There’s artificial turf, a sunset, their first home game and homecoming, as well. It’s just an incredible night.”

Not only was it Nolensville’s first-ever home game, but it also was the Knights’ first varsity football contest and their first homecoming game.

The South Gibson Hornets’ were the Knights’ first opponent, and they didn’t take it easy on the new program.

The Hornets went up 14-0 in the first quarter and never looked back, beating Nolensville 42-7.

With their only varsity game this season in the books, head coach Will Hester’s Knights will go back to playing a junior varsity schedule for the rest of the season.

Though they lost on Friday, a football tradition was started.
