One in eight students in Williamson County will have little access this year to basic school supplies because of their family’s economic circumstances.

On July 30, 2016, GraceWorks Ministries along with other community partners will distribute backpacks filled with school supplies to help students in need have a good start to the school year at the 2016 Big Backpack Giveaway.

The event from 4 to 6 p.m. Liberty Elementary, 600 Liberty Pike, includes music, food and fun for the entire family. Children are required to be present to receive backpacks.

For the convenience of other county residents, backpacks and supplies also will be distributed at smaller giveaways the same day. One is from 10 a.m. to noon at Fairview High School, 2595 Fairview Blvd., Fairview, and the other from 4 to 6 p.m. at Bethesda United Methodist Church, 4814 Bethesda Rd., Thompson’s Station.

Some supplies still needed for The Big Backpack Giveaway including 1-2- inch three-ring binders, composition books and glue sticks. Cash donations will allow organizers to purchase required supplies that have not been donated.

Through these events and in collaboration with other groups and agencies 2,400 backpacks filled with supplies will be distributed to students.

Many of the school supplies are provided by the United Way Patricia Hart Society’s Stuff the Bus Campaign and Publix. The event has been sponsored by area churches, civic groups, businesses and individuals for 13 years.

“Receiving a backpack filled with the tools needed to succeed in school can be a life-changing experience,” said Brian Myers, church and community relations manager for GraceWorks.

“Helping provide necessary school supplies to Williamson County students in need equips them with the tools needed to have a successful school year.”

Supplies can be dropped off at GraceWorks by July 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, or cash donations can be sent to GraceWorks Ministries, 104 Southeast Parkway, Franklin, TN 37064. Please put “backpacks” in the subject line of checks. You may also donate online quickly and securely by clicking here.

Volunteers are also needed to help during this event. Those interested can sign up here.

Sponsors include Williamson Medical Center, Publix, Heritage Heating & Cooling, BlueCross BlueShield, Mapco/Delek, K-Love 97.1, United Way and area churches, organizations and businesses.
