On Friday, the TSSAA named their finalists for Mr. & Miss Basketball for the 2016 season. Three local players were named finalists.
For Miss Basketball, Brentwood Academy’s Sydni Harvey was named one of three finalists for the Division II-AA award. Harvey has help lead the Lady Eagles to a 19-5 record and number one ranking in the state. The Lady Eagles have played in 3 straight Division II-AA state championship games, winning the last two. Harvey was named MVP the past two seasons in Division II-AA. A sophomore, Harvey will likely be one of the best players in the nation and top women’s basketball recruits in the coming years.
On the gentlemen’s side, two local players were named finalists. At the Division II-A level, FRA’s Kenny Cooper was honored as a finalist. Cooper, a senior, has led the Panthers to an undefeated district record in the regular season. During Cooper’s time on The Hill, FRA won two sectional titles, a regional title, and a state championship runner-up. Cooper has signed a letter of intent to play at Lipscomb next season.
At Division II-AA level, Brentwood Academy’s Darius Garland was named a finalist. A sophomore guard, Garland was named first team All-State last year for the state champion Eagles. He has led BA to a 21-3 record to this point. Garland is already being listed among the top point guards in the 2018 recruiting class.
The winners will be announced at the Murphy Center on March 8th at 7 PM. Before the awards, the draw for the Division I Boys’ State Tournament will be announced.
