Last-minute touchdown lifts Ravenwood into quarterfinals

willcofootball-storyheaderA touchdown with 48 seconds left in the game advanced the Ravenwood Raptors to the Class 6A quarterfinals on Friday.

Down 35-31 to the Mt. Juliet Golden Bears (9-3) with under a minute to play, running back Carter Nelson scored on a 3-yard rush to put Ravenwood (7-5) ahead 38-35. The Raptor defense stood strong, preserving the upset win and a berth in the quarters.

Nelson was the offensive driver for Ravenwood. He finished with 190 rushing on 27 attempts and scored three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving), none more important than his last.

McCain Marrow added a 14-for-21 passing night with 230 yards and two touchdown passes to Anthony Holmes and Nathan Freeman. Blake Van Landingham threw the other TD pass for the Raptors.

The win was the second this season for Ravenwood over Mt. Juliet, which won Region 3-6A. It sets up a quarterfinal matchup with Cordova.

The 11-1 Wolves beat Collierville 28-21 Friday. Their only loss this season came on Oct. 28 against undefeated Whitehaven.
