Josh Wilson’s Walkoff Single in 12th Gives CSCC Game 1 Win

(Columbia, TN) — Columbia State seems to always find a way to win the game. Even when faced with adversity several times, they find a way to win baseball games. Tonight was no different. They trailed by three after five innings, trailed by one in the 10th inning and trailed by one in the twelfth inning. Still, it’s the Chargers who take game one of the three game series with Roane State.

Roane State scored two runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 5-2 and if anyone thought that the game was anywhere near over, they haven’t seen Columbia State play often this season.

This group of Chargers are capable of exploding for several runs all at once and in the bottom of the sixth CSCC forced the visitors to make a pitching change. Before the inning was over, four Chargers crossed the plate giving the hosts a 7-5 advantage.

Roane State reversed roles in the top of the ninth pushing two runs across to tie the game.

In the first extra frame, Roane State scored on a Drew Baselr sacrifice fly. That would be answered in the bottom half of the tenth by a Joshua Wilson sac fly of his own, scoring Hayden Holt to tie the game at eight.

Neither team would score in the 11th and in the 12th Lance Mayes led off the inning for Roane State tripling to right field. He would score on an error by CSCC shortstop, Holt.

For the third time in the game, Columbia State had their backs against the wall and for the third time, they battled back. This time delivering the knockout blow.

It started with a Dustin Delgado leadoff walk, setting the stage for Tyler Fullerton to swing at the first pitch and triple on a flyball to left field tying the ballgame up at 9 a piece.

That led to Joshua Wilson’s heroics. He singled on a 1-1 pitch and as the ball hit the left field grass, Fulletron could jog home to the celebration at home plate.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow for game two and if needed game three.
