Henry’s Brace helps Page get hard-fought win

Megan Henry is only a freshman, but the kid from Texas proved on Thursday evening that she’s more than capable of playing with the veterans.

“She’s an all around good communicator, a good player who is always excited to be out here whether it’s a game or practice.” Page Head Coach, Nate Clapp said. “She has a great attitude and the girls love her.”

Henry hit the back of the net twice for the Patriots in their wild 4-3 win over Fairview.  Her first tied things up after Fairview’s Suhrbirer went top shelf on the Page goalkeeper  from distance, giving the Yellowjackets the 1-nill lead.

In her first home game ever as a Patriot, Henry said she was “So nervous” but that her teammates helped pick her up.

“Everyone on the team is so supportive.” Said the 9th grader. “Every single thing that you do, they are right there with you. They’re like a second family.”

Mid-way through the first half, after Henry had just went off the post with the header, the forward rounded the keeper and finished by slotting it in the right side of the net.

Near the end of the first 40 minutes of play, Henry was fouled in the box and was given the chance to convert from the spot.

“I was too nervous about over hitting it, that I under hit it.” Said Henry of her missed opportunity for a go-ahead goal on the PK.

After the miss, the game went into the half tied at one goal a piece.

It would, of course, be Henry who would put her team out in front for good early in the second. Taking the ball down the left side, Henry was one on one with the keeper and snuck it passed the hands of the Fairview goalie.

Page’s third goal would come from the left boot of Caitlyn Sutton, who tipped it just under the keepers outstretched hands.

Fairview would get one back to make it a game again at 3-2.

But shortly after that, off of an out-swinging corner, the ball hit off the stomach of another Patriot freshman, Gigi Maddox, who pushed it past the keeper for the fourth goal. With just a few minutes to play it seemed like just a little insurance but Fairview would make Page cash in on it.

A third Fairview goal with just minutes to play, made it a one goal game again.

Page would keep possession for most of the remaining six minutes to get the win.

It was a team win for Page in every sense of the word. The game ball, one would expect to go to Megan Henry, actually went to 10th grader Halli Collins. Coach Clapp said she was the one who did exactly what he asked from her at halftime.

But the focus will be on District 12’s new star.

“She is a few things away from being a phenomenal player.” Coach Clapp said of Henry. “She’s new to the school, the area and our style of play and she’s slowly tweaking her style of play to our style of play. She’s coming along very well.”

Two goals in her first regular season game as a Patriot, a high schooler and a Tennessean. Not a bad start.

For Page they play again on the 25th at Wayne County.

Fairview will also be on the road at Conersville.

  1. Steve,

Its Nate Henry, Megans dad. There is a pretty good rivalry between Houston and Dallas, especially in girls soccer. Just wanted to let you know we spell her name Megan, and she is from Tomball, TX, which is just outside of Houston. Saying she is from Dallas is almost an insult, lol. Appreciate your kind words above and the work that you do.
