Haslam Signs Ridesharing Regulations Bill

Tennessee legislators recently passed a bill that provides amendments for the existing regulations on ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft.

Not only does the bill distinguish the app-based services, named a “transportation network company”, from taxi and other driving services, it also provides that no individual municipalities will have to draft their own regulations for the ridesharing services of this kind.

Ridesharing services are set apart because vehicle ownership belongs to the individual driver and not the company. A TNC is required under the law to check out drivers before letting them drive for the company.

The new legislation also lays out insurance requirements and states that background checks will be required for drivers, and that there shall be a zero tolerance policy regarding the use of alcohol or drugs while providing rides under a TNC.
