Hands-On Apple Watch Preview

The Apple Watch is coming soon, early 2015 according to Apple, and there are some strong opinions floating around the web about the new release.

Before we get to that though, here’s a rundown of what the watch is offering:

  • Timekeeping (well, I’d hope so)
  • Communicating other watching users with taps and heartbeats (cute, I guess)
  • Keeping track health and fitness using circles for calorie burning, exercise and standing
  • Syncing with phone to complete messages and emails
  • A number of apps (Check out WatchAware for Apple Watch app news)
  • Maps

Here are just a few of those strong opinions:

Techradar said, “Apple’s clearly aiming this at the fashion market as much as the person who loves to be an early adopter – given the smartwatch market is still yet to take off, it makes sense to focus further afield in terms of consumer targeting.”

“There’s only so much you can do with sapphire glass and power-efficient microprocessors. Current reports say the Apple Watch could burn out in times as short as 2.5 hours before needing a recharge,” said Mark Wilson writing for Fast Company.

BGR wrote in response to Wilson’s piece: “The thing is, consumers will begrudgingly put up with mediocre battery life when using a product that truly enhances their life. Besides, if the Apple Watch is so compelling that “loyal” users find themselves engaged with it for hours on end every single day, that’s a point in the Apple Watch’s favor, not one against it.”

In an article by Business Insider, “Apple’s first presentation of the Apple Watch, in September, gave no strong sense of whether the watch would be a smash hit. People who attended said the watch looked good but that there wasn’t a clear reason for someone to buy the watch.”

The overall public opinion remains wary of whether or not the smartwatch market is going to fully take off. Many think it is just another gadget that does what your other multiple mobile devices can already do, but with six different versions of this thing set to be available to consumers in April, we’ll just have to wait and see if the watch is really all it’s cracked up to be.
