During April, National Autism Awareness Month, Jack Yacoubian Jewelers celebrates and honors the artistic creations of artists with autism. Many individuals with autism spectrum disorder are gifted in the arts. Three of the featured artists, two visual, and one a performing musician, are young adults who have successfully honed their craft throughout their school years. Each has aged out or will shortly age out of their school services into the adult work world, seeking forms of employment and varying degrees of independence, including housing.
Being an artist and also growing up is challenging in our culture, let alone when an artist is navigating these life hurdles with a disability that affects communication, behavior, and social interactions. Yet, art bridges the world of disability through its beauty and ability to communicate from the heart of the artist and to the eyes and heart of the viewer. Art is a universal language.
As we get closer to the April Art Scene, we want to feature each of the artists who will be part of the installation at Jack Yacoubian Jewelers.
The next artist we will feature is Grace Goad. You can see more of Grace’s artwork here on Facebook. Grace Goad began painting when she was four, exhibiting at six and selling at age 8. She was featured on The View when she was 11 and has been highlighted by numerous local and national media sources since that time including The New York Times last month. Her work has been exhibited in Seattle, New York, the Birkshires, Greensboro, N.C., and numerous venues and galleries locally. Her work is carried by Shimai Gallery of Contemporary Craft in Nashville and Spring Hollow Studio Gallery in Ventura, California.
A portion of the store’s exhibition commission will benefit the Nashville IDD Housing Group, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that helps prepare persons with an intellectual and/or developmental disability (IDD) to live independently within a supportive community.
