Summer is an exciting time for children to enjoy time with friends and family, but for many children, summer can mean many hungry days. Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does a child’s need for good nutrition. For the seventh consecutive year, the Franklin Special School District is partnering with the Tennessee Department of Human Services (DHS) under an agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to offer a Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to children. The SFSP helps to bridge the summer hunger gap by providing free food to kids at community sites during the months of June and July.
The 2016 Summer Food Service Program kicks off Tuesday, May 31. The program’s goal is to make sure any child who needs breakfast or lunch can receive it, so there are no forms to fill out or qualifications to meet. Any child under 18 is eligible to receive breakfast and lunch through the SFSP at no cost. Adults may purchase a meal for $3.25.
The FSSD will host one dining site throughout the summer (excluding the week of July 4-8), with a second site to open for three weeks in July.
Summer Food Service Program Serving Sites:
- Franklin Elementary School Cafeteria, 1501 Figuers Drive Breakfast is available from 7:45 until 8:30 and lunch is available from 11:00 until 12:30, Monday through Friday. Dates available: May 31 through August 3 Please enter through the school’s multi-purpose room entrance, adjacent to the staff parking lot at the side of the building.
- Freedom Intermediate School Cafeteria, 840 Glass Lane Breakfast is available from 8:00 until 8:30 and lunch is available from 12:15 until 12:45, Monday through Friday. Dates available: July 11 through July 29
Community partners receiving food service from these cafeterias include the FSSD Morning and Afternoon Care (MAC) program, FSSD WeeMAC, The Franklin/Williamson County Boys & Girls Club, Franklin Housing Authority, Franktown Open Hearts, The Gentry Foundation, Williamson County Parks & Recreation at Academy Park, Kids Academy at BGA, Franklin Estates Mobile Home
Community, Mid-Cumberland Head Start, My Friend’s House, FSSD Young Scholars Institute at Poplar Grove Elementary, and visitors to the FSSD’s Storybus Plus program throughout its summer schedule.
Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. There will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.
