Franklin Special Board Approves Calendar Aligned to Williamson’s

Discussed at its January board retreat, the Franklin Special School District knew it wanted to closely match its calendar to that of its sister system.

In looking at what was proposed for Williamson County Schools, the six board members unanimously voted Monday for what they called calendar option B.

Board members said it was important to recognize that families had students in both systems. They wanted to make sure to accommodate those split-system households.

As a school board member, I can tell a lot of parents appreciate the work into this,” member Kevin Townsel said. “Basically the groups you serve are split. I am excited that we have great options.”

Here’s how the Franklin Special School District calendar looks for 2017-2018:

– School will start Aug. 10 but with early dismal
– Aug. 11 is the first full day
– Aug. 18 is the first full day for kindergarten students
– A full week of fall break Oct. 9-13
– A full week of Thanksgiving break Nov. 20-24
– Two weeks from Dec. 22-Jan. 2 for winter break
– A full week of spring break March 26-March 30
– May 23 is the last day for students

Here’s how the Williamson County School’s calendar looks for 2017-2018:

– School will start Aug. 10
– A three-day fall break will happen Oct. 11-13
– No Veteran’s Day off
– A week-long Thanksgiving break from Nov. 20-24
– Two-week winter break from Dec. 22-Jan. 4
– Week-long spring break from March 26-30
– Last day of school May 18

Getting to this calendar took more than two months for the Williamson County School Board. Previously, nearly 13,000 responded to three calendar options. In an effort to compromise, the district staff and Superintendent Mike Looney worked with the board to create what is now known as calendar M.
