John Bailey Williams and Jeffrey Rein became the first Ravenwood rugby players to earn college scholarships this week, both committing to play for Furman University next year.

Rein, a captain for the Raptors this year, is a four-time all-star in Tennessee and was the MVP of the South all-star team last year.

“We are thrilled that Rein has decided to join our rugby family,” said Furman Coach John Roberts on the school’s website. “He is very quick, versatile, intuitive and sees the game well. I am sure he will thrive here.”

Williams is a three-time all-star in Tennessee and a member of the USA U-19 team. He has participated in the Las Vegas 7s Invitational Tournaments each year from 2013-2015.

“We are thrilled that John has decided to join our rugby family,” said Roberts. “He will be the fourth coach’s son to be a part of our program. It is very affirming when long-time rugby coaches send their sons to Furman be student athletes.”

The Raptors were state champions in 2012 and 2013 while finishing as runner up in 2014.

Williams and Rein become part of the Paladins’ third scholarship class. They finished last fall with a Southern Rugby Conference title and a No. 6 national ranking.

Furman has become a popular landing spot for Williamson County athletes of late as four committed to Furman’s football team on National Signing Day in February.
