Earn Money for College Through the Williamson County Fair

What's on Tap at the Williamson County Fair - Aug 12

In keeping with its mission of celebrating the community through education and local culture, the Williamson County Fair is offering scholarship opportunities–for the fourth year in a row–that will help deserving students pursue undergraduate studies.

The Williamson County Fair Board, a non-profit organization that operates the nine-day event each August, will award two or more current high school seniors with one-year scholarships. Recipients can use the funds to attend the college or university of their choice, with total monies not to exceed $4,000.

According to the Fair Board’s Chairman, Williamson County Mayor Rogers Anderson, the scholarship fund was established as a way to show appreciation for local students’ involvement in the community.

“It is so important for our youth to realize the value of participating in community events like the Fair, which is produced entirely by volunteers who truly care about our county and preserving its culture,” Anderson said. “When teens are exposed to an effort like that and are excited to get involved themselves, there’s a trickle-down effect that encourages service for a lifetime, and we want to acknowledge the impact it has on our community.”

Since 2013, the scholarship application has been open to Williamson County students who have at least a 2.75 GPA, have volunteered at the Fair, and complete a 300-word essay on the benefits of the event. Recipients must then satisfactorily complete the first college semester and obtain at least a 2.75 grade-point average to receive the funds. Nearly $15,800 has been awarded to Williamson County students since the program’s inaugural year.

“The Fair partners with numerous volunteers, community organizations, businesses and sponsors to ensure that each year’s event provides exceptional learning opportunities for people of all ages, so they’re able to understand and celebrate our county’s legacy and what that means to our identity,” Anderson said. “These scholarships for our participating youth brings that experience full-circle.”

Scholarship applications can be found at Williamson County Fair website  and must be submitted by April 1, 2016.

This year marks the 12th anniversary for the Williamson County Fair, which began its modern iteration in 2005. Directed by a Board of 29 area leaders and supported by more than 1,800 volunteers, numerous sponsors, its home county and surrounding communities, the Fair has grown each summer and now hosts approximately 200,000 attendees over the nine-day run.
