Donovan Stewart’s Week 8 Victory Formation

There are only three weeks remaining in the 2016 regular season and as usual there are tight region races all across the Volunteer state.

Of the 50 regions that make up the eight classifications, 15 region races have been decided and region champions have been crowned.

The other 35 regions will be decided in the next three weeks which got me thinking who are the dominant programs across the state when it comes to Region play?

So does it take anything extra to get on a big region winning streak?

“We treat all the games on our schedule the same, regardless if it’s a region game or not,” Maryville head coach George Quarles said.

Quarles and the Rebels know what it takes to dominant the region as the Rebels haven’t lost a region game since 2000.

Yes, you read that right. The last region loss for Maryville was a 21-14 defeat to Knoxville Halls in Quarles’ second season as head coach.

Since then the Rebels have won a staggering 109 consecutive region games which has led to 15 straight region titles and 11 state titles, which of course is the ultimate prize.

In fact, Maryville is an absurd 113-2 (.983) in region play since Quarles took over the program in 1999, the two region blemishes came in 2000 as the Rebels started the season 0-4. They will try for their 110th straight region win on Friday as they face William Blount, losers of 14 consecutive region games.

Maryville isn’t the only region kingpin across the state as Greeneville is next on the list as the Greene Devils are winners of 58 consecutive region contests.

Greeneville head coach Caine Ballard hasn’t lost a region games (45-0) since taking over the program in 2009, the Greene Devils started their current streak of 58 region wins back in 2007.

“Winning the region title is always the first team goal that we set every year and obviously doing well in your region is very important because it leads to home playoff games,” Ballard said.

“We don’t prepare any different then non region games but we always stress the importance of them.”

Greeneville (7-0, No. 2 in 4A) will have its toughest region 1-4A game to date as they travel over to Rogersville to take on Cherokee (6-1) led by former Greeneville offensive coordinator Cody Baugh.

There are 17 other programs across the state that have currently won at least 10 straight region games as Class 1A powerhouses Union City (31) and Nashville Christian (27) as well as 3A juggernaut Alcoa (21) round out the top five.

Union City (8-0, No. 2 in 1A) will put that 31 game region winning streak on the line on Friday as they travel over to the state’s top ranked 1A team in Dresden (7-0), winners of seven straight region 7-1A games.

If Nashville Christian (5-2, No. 7) wants to win their fourth consecutive region 5-1A title they will earn it over the next three weeks as they play Gordonsville (5-2), Middle Tennessee Christian (7-1) and No. 8 Trousdale County (6-1), the three teams that are currently just one game back of the Eagles.

Besides winning 21 consecutive in region 2-3A, Alcoa (6-1, No. 1 in 3A) is 53-1 in region action since Gary Rankin arrived in 2006.

“We really stress the importance of doing well in region games,” Rankin said. “Obviously winning the region is the first team goal we have but I really stress that we want to win the region and set up “our” playoff table the best we can.” “You want to play more home playoff games and when you are able to do that, the better I feel you play and the kids play a lot better when you are at home in the playoffs.”

The Tornadoes will travel to Christian Academy of Knoxville (7-1, No. 3) on October 28 with the winner being the region 2-3A champion.

Fulton winners of three consecutive 4A state titles (2012, 2013 and 2014) are 28-2 since 2011 under the guidance of coach Rob Black while 2014 3A state champion CPA are 29-2 since 2011 under the watchful eye of Ingle Martin.
