CPA’s 5-Year League Win Streak Concludes

One of the state’s most impressive streaks came to an end Friday.

A tough season for the Christ Presbyterian Academy Lions (1-5, 1-1) got a little tougher to swallow with a 7-6 loss to Region 5-3A foe Stratford (7-0, 3-0), marking the first time since 2011 the Lions have lost a region or district game.

The last time CPA lost a region or district contest was on Oct. 7, 2011, to Maplewood 21-20 when the Lions were in District 10-2A.

Almost five years later on the nose and after 26-straight region or district wins, the defending state 3A runner up Lions lost to Stratford Friday on a missed PAT in the fourth quarter.

CPA couldn’t get its offense moving for the third game in a row. After being shut out in their previous two games, the Lions didn’t get into the end zone until James Deaton’s 5-yard rushing touchdown in the last quarter. He had 68 yards on the ground on 20 carries.

While its offense struggled, CPA’s defense was very good against the Spartans. After giving up a touchdown in the first quarter, the Lions didn’t allow Stratford to add the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

CPA will have to find a better offense moving forward this season. When it travels to East Nashville Magnet (3-4, 2-1) to take on the Eagles in Week 8, it will face a defense that has registered two shutouts in its last three games, including a 38-0 win over Whites Creek on Friday.
