Church of the City Merges With The People’s Church, Hosts Grand Opening Sunday

Church of the City Grand Opening

Church of the City and The People’s Church have united together to become the new Church of the City. The 40-day journey of joining the two churches is coming to an end this weekend culminating in a grand re-opening ceremony Sunday, Sept. 13, at the main Church of the City campus, 828 Murfreesboro Road, Franklin. This day is promised to be the beginning of the new adventure as one congregation.

The idea of merging the churches was raised last March when The People’s Church was in the midst of a leadership change and needed a pastor. Darren Whitehead, Church of the City’s founding pastor, is senior pastor. Coincidentally, Whitehead was on staff at People’s – formerly First Baptist Church of Franklin – when he came to the United States from Australia in 1998. Whitehead left in 2004 for Willow Creek in Chicago and returned to Middle Tennessee in 2013.

people's church renovation According to the Church of the City web site, during the past 40 days, Church of the City and The People’s Church have been on a journey of prayer, meeting during four services at Centennial High School while Church of the City’s Franklin location, formerly The People’s Church, underwent a renovation. Once back at the Franklin campus on Sunday, the church will hold two services at 9 and 11 a.m.

Following each service on Sept. 13, a church-wide festivity will take place on the front lawn. Attendees are encouraged to stay after for free food and games for the kids including face painting, inflatables, balloon animals and more.

“It’s going to be a great celebration bringing The People’s Church and Church of the City together,” said Ron Brown, Church of the City executive pastor. “We are celebrating our new journey together and what God’s doing and what the people have done to get us this far as a church. It’s a time to pause and celebrate, have fun and remember why we are doing this.”

Church of the City has a campus in East Nashville and will be opening a West Nashville location in fall 2015. The People’s Church in Spring Hill is now also known as Church of the City.
