The Brentwood Police Department issued a warning to citizens on its Facebook page that Craigslist scams are being called in.

The department said with the prevalence of internet sales sites such as Craigslist, fraud is commonplace. But, there are ways you can protect yourself.

If you are selling something on an internet site, be aware of emails or texts from someone not in your area. Also be aware of vague initial inquiry and poor grammar and spelling, as well as Western Union, Money Gram, cashier check, money order, Paypal, shipping, escrow service or a “guarantee.” The inability or refusal to meet face-to-face to complete the transaction is also a warning sign.

To avoid being scammed, do not extend payment to anyone you have not met in person. Also beware of offers involving shipping, and try to deal with locals you can meet in person. Never wire funds such as through Western Union, and don’t accept cashier/certified checks or money orders. Banks will often cash fakes and then hold you responsible.

Never give out your financial information such as your bank account, social security number or Paypal account number. Do not rent or purchase sight-unseen, and refuse background/credit checks until you have met the landlord or employer in person.

If you suspect fraud, you can report it to the Federal Trade Commission or the Internet Fraud Complaint Center. To file a complaint, just go to www.ftc.gov/complaint or call 1-877-FTC-HELP. You can also file with the IFCC here.
