Five families were displaced Monday evening after fire heavily damaged their apartment building in the Sussex Downs complex.
The Franklin Fire Department was dispatched to the fire just after 8 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting through the roof of Building C at the Sussex Downs Apartments, located at 1125 Magnolia Drive.
Franklin Fire Marshal Andy King said all of the occupants of the 20-unit, two-story building were able to evacuate. No one was injured.
The cause of the fire, which King said appeared to have originated from a second floor balcony, is under investigation.
He estimated damage to the $2 million building at $400,000. King said it was not equipped with automatic fire sprinklers
