Land Between the Lakes

The largest inland penninsula in the United States sits in the northeast corner of Tennessee. Its 170,000 acres of wilderness, water and winding streams and trails make this National Recreation Area the perfect place for a quiet weekend getaway.

Formed where the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers were impounded to create Lake Kentucky and Lake Barkley, more than 200 miles of trails criss, cross, zig and zag through the rolling and forested hills of the Land Between the Lakes.

Visitors of all skill levels will find trails that meet their needs. More extensive hiking networks include the 65-mile-long North/South Trail; the 14-mile Canal Loop, which is a shared-use trail with mountain bikers; and the 26-mile Fort Henry system, which traces the path of General Grant’s troops during the Civil War.

There are 16 campgrounds and five free lake-access areas for you to stake your tent. If camping is not your thing, Paduah, Ky. where you can book a room for the weekend, sits a short drive up the Ohio River.

As for the Lakes, the Kentucky Dam creates the largest man-made lake in the eastern United States. It backs up the Tennessee River for 184 miles and creates a lake that stretches south across the western tip of Kentucky and nearly the entire width of Tennessee. At maximum normal operating level, Kentucky Lake covers 160,300 acres. In the west, Barkley Lake is 134 miles long and circumscribes more than 1,000 miles of coast. Together the two lakes run parallel for more than 50 miles, creating the Land of Between the Lakes.
