door-88.The Ishtar Gate
The gate is a deep blue color with a cedar roof and frame with a door that has the image of the dragon God Marduk. Surrounding Marduk are golden lions and bulls. The gate was ordered by King Nebuchadnezzar II in 575 BC as the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon. It was dedicated to Ishtar, the goddess of fertility, love, war and sex and was originally one of the wonders of the world before it was replaced by the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

In the 20th century, the gate was reconstructed using its original bricks, found in an excavation from 1902 to 1914.
