10. James Davis, War Hero

The first American killed during the Vietnam War, James Davis, was from Livingston. After perishing while sacrificing himself to draw fire away from his men, a monument now stands in town honoring him.

Davis died in 1961. Although Americans soldiers had been killed in Vietnam since 1945 and the first one listed on the Vietnam Memorial Wall was killed in 1956, Davis was proclaimed to be the first American death by President Lyndon Johnson, partly because the war didn’t officially “begin” until December 11, 1961.
